Why Are Some Rooms Hotter or Colder Than Others?

Have you ever noticed that one room in your home is always warmer, while another feels chilly, no matter how high you set the thermostat? Uneven heating and cooling is one of the most common HVAC complaints. The good news is, it’s usually fixable.

Common Causes of Uneven Temperatures

  • Ductwork Issues: Leaky, blocked, or poorly designed ductwork can prevent air from reaching certain rooms. Even small leaks can cause big differences in airflow.
  • Insulation Problems: If a room has poor insulation - or none at all - it won’t hold the conditioned air your system is delivering. Rooms above garages or with lots of windows often struggle the most.
  • Sun Exposure: South-facing rooms or spaces with large windows can heat up much faster than shaded areas. The HVAC system is working the same everywhere, but the sun creates extra heat that your unit has to overcome.
  • System Imbalance: Sometimes the problem is as simple as unbalanced dampers or registers. If airflow is stronger in some ducts and weaker in others, temperatures will never feel consistent.
  • An Aging HVAC System: If your system is nearing the end of its life, it may no longer be powerful enough to distribute air evenly throughout your home or business.

What You Can Do

  • Check vents and registers: Make sure they’re open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains.
  • Change your air filter: A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes uneven temperatures worse.
  • Add insulation or window treatments: Simple upgrades can reduce heat loss or gain.
  • Schedule a professional inspection: At Crawford Plumbing, HVAC & Sheet Metal, we can check your ductwork, balance your system, and identify if repairs or upgrades are needed.

Long-Term Solutions

If uneven heating and cooling continues, you may benefit from:

  • Duct sealing or redesign to improve airflow.
  • Zoning systems that allow you to control temperatures in different areas independently.
  • Upgrading your HVAC unit to a properly sized and more efficient system.
