How to Become a Plumber

At Crawford, we believe in building things that last, including careers. If you're interested in pursuing a trade route after high school, here's what you need to know to get started in your chase of a rewarding profession like plumbing.

  1. Graduate High School: To become a plumber in Texas, you need to be at least 16 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

  2. Apply for Apprenticeship License: Click HERE for an application from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. There is a $15 application fee and fingerprinting is required. You will need to allow up to 45 days to receive your pocket card.

  3. Call Crawford: You will work under the supervision of experienced journeyman plumbers, gaining hands-on experience and learning the skills needed to becoming a plumber. The apprenticeship program typically takes 2 to 5 years to complete.

  4. Let's Go to Work: Many plumbers start out working for plumbing companies or contractors, gaining experience and building their skills. As you gain more experience, you can pursue higher-level positions and focus on continuing your education, staying up to date with plumbing codes and regulations, and improving your skills to advance your career.

When you join the Crawford team, you're becoming part of something bigger: a family of companies that put integrity, excellence, and people first. Get started today by calling (936) 553-1806.
